my focus
is a Project that caught
my attention
having lived near this area while in Mexico
{actually lived in the Sonoran desert region, just not in this part}
having passed so near this often on my trips back and forth
not knowing it was there
in need of protection
{this article that I share, is just the beginning of it, found on the Rainforest Site}

Protecting Our Sky Islands

Working to preserve some of the most diverse habitat in the U.S.

This epiphyte is a relative of the pineapple

These days, we hear a great deal about the problems facing the world, from deforestation to climate change, from extinction to pollution. In the sensationalist mainstream media, conflict and despair often overshadow the things that are being done to overcome the issues that face humanity.
So you may not have heard of the Sky Island Alliance, a small but shining beacon that brings together the absolute best in science, politics, and community with one purpose in mind: to permanently protect a series of unique ecosystems that range Mexico to Arizona and New Mexico. SIA does not have the nation's spotlight on it. It has not captured the imagination of national and international media. And it cannot singlehandedly stop the rampant environmental degradation that contributes to so many global crises - but it can light the way for us.

The Sky Islands of the Sonoran desert are isolated mountains surrounded by desert and grasslands. Miniature ecosystems affected by elevation and weather can be vastly different from one part of the mountain to the next, and in the peaks and valleys of the Sky Islands, plants from the desert mingle freely with tropical and grassland cousins. In one part of a single canyon, a saguaro cactus stands tall and aloof; in another part, tropical plumeria sport stunning white blossoms. An ancient grass that is the mother of all corn grows tall and spindly among desert oaks, which are in turn covered in harmless epiphytes that survive on nothing but what the air carries to them. And hidden in a niche far from prying eyes and hungry cattle, a colony of native slow-growing cycads mostly unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs ekes out a living on a breathtaking stone ledge. These rich habitats are home to a tremendous diversity of local and transient species, including half the bird species of North America, more than a hundred mammals ranging from elusive jaguars to endangered bats, and turtles, butterflies, lizards, and more." Mission 4 Monday sadly ended last year as a meme, but I continue to share here and I know others also share various MISSIONS, especially the people above. Check them out!!! Encourage and perhaps join us.
Since my life is a MISSION, I share whenever I can. There are many of you, who do community involvement/church events, volunteer opportunities or know missionaries that you could share to motivate others. Motherhood and Homeschooling are MISSIONS and callings!!!
Each of these are MISSIONS and important to encourage others.
If you are doing something or share someone's MISSION on your blog, please leave your info in the comments anytime! Hopefully others will notice & come visit. THANKS!
